Our First Year Riding Velosano

July 2, 2018

On July 21st, Ada and I will be celebrating her 2nd birthday doing something a little extra special. We will be riding our bike (and trailer!) in honor of my mom, grandfather, and uncle, and in support of VeloSano 5. Unfortunately, our connection to cancer is not a rare tale. We are riding so that one day, it will be.

Velosano is a community fundraiser and bike ride benefitting lifesaving cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. Every dollar we raise supports new and emerging cancer research through clinical trials, genomics, and immunotherapy.

Why Are We Riding?

In short, for all of the reasons above. But the long answer goes much deeper than that.
This is a big year. As mentioned, Ada will turn two on the day of our ride. It seemed fitting that we would do something fun, like go for a bike ride (ummmm, that includes ice cream 😉 ) to celebrate. Hopefully this begins a wonderful tradition of celebrating birthday’s by doing great things she is passionate about.

In addition, four days later I will be celebrating my 31st birthday, which will be one birthday more than my mom ever celebrated. I’m not one who dwells on the past, nor do I live a life of “what if’s”. However, for some reason there is something very monumental about turning an age older than your parent – and I’ll only be 31.

At the age of 30, my mom lost her battle to colon cancer. Twelve months earlier, her dad passed away from pancreatic cancer, and in 2011 my uncle (her brother) also passed away due to colon cancer. In 2012 we would find out that these were all linked to one another due to a genetic mutation, but nevertheless, it was cancer that ultimately took them. While the ride may be on Ada’s actual birthday, I feel like I am doing this more as a way to “do something” in honor of them for my own. To celebrate their lives, and to raise money that will directly benefit research that will hopefully make a positive impact on someone else’s life.

The Details!

We will be riding in the 12 mile Family Ride and have committed to raising $500. If you would like to donate and support us in our efforts, we would be ever so grateful! You may do so by clicking HERE!!!
